What Is Poem to Song?

Poem to song takes a poem you wrote and sets it to music. Paste the poem into the Own Lyrics tab, describe the sound you imagine, such as a soft folk song, a children’s song or a dramatic rock ballad, and you get two finished songs in about a minute, with your lines sung word for word in the order you wrote them.

Poems and songs have always been close. Many poems already have rhythm, rhyme and repeated lines, which is most of what a song needs. What a poem does not have is a melody, an arrangement and a voice. A poem to song converter adds those three, so a poem that lived on a page or in a notebook becomes something people can hear, sing and share.

Writers use it to hear their work in a new way. Teachers use poem to song in class, so students can hear the rhythm of a poem they are studying. Families turn a poem written for a birthday, a wedding or a funeral into a song, and poets make audio versions of their work for readings, videos and social media.

Because it runs on the same studio as our full AI music generator, you can keep shaping the result. Add a chorus by repeating your strongest lines, extend the song with another stanza, rewrite a section, or separate the vocals so you can perform your poem to song yourself.

Your words, sung as written

In Own Lyrics mode every line of your poem is sung in order, with nothing added or rewritten.

Six styles for poetry

Indie folk, children’s song, Celtic ballad, dark cinematic rock, playful kids’ acoustic and a piano ballad.

Verse and chorus tags

Mark stanzas with [Verse] and a repeated line with [Chorus], and the music follows the shape of the poem.

Two songs per run

Every generation returns two complete takes, so you can hear two different readings of the same poem.

Any language

Paste a poem in Spanish, French, Japanese or any other language and it is sung in that language.

Original and downloadable

Every song downloads as MP3 with any plan or credit pack, with WAV on Standard and above.

Hear Your Poem Sung

A soft voice, a fingerpicked guitar and a slow waltz rhythm. Hearing your poem to song for the first time shows you where its music already is: which lines lift, which rhymes ring and which words need more air. Poem to song is a new way to read your own work.

Poems for the Classroom

A bright children’s choir, ukulele and glockenspiel. Use poem to song for a class poem, a poem the students wrote together or a poem about the lesson to music, and the rhythm and the rhymes become something the whole class can remember.

For love poems

Love Poems Turned Into Songs

Fiddle, tin whistle and a warm voice in a slow waltz. A love poem written for an anniversary, a proposal or a wedding becomes a song you can play on the day, with every word you wrote in it. That is poem to song at its most personal.

For dramatic verse
Epic and Dark Poems

For dramatic verse

Epic and Dark Poems

Pounding drums, low strings and a voice that builds to a shout. Poems about storms, battles or struggle sound powerful as cinematic rock, and the poem to song studio lets the music grow with the verses.

For families
Children’s Poems Set to Music

For families

Children’s Poems Set to Music

Bouncy acoustic guitar, upright bass and whistling. A funny poem about muddy boots, a pet or a rainy day becomes a song children ask to hear again, and a poem your child wrote becomes their first song.

For remembering someone
Memorial and Tribute Poems

For remembering someone

Memorial and Tribute Poems

A soft piano and a warm voice for a poem about someone you miss. Play it at a memorial, under a slideshow of photos, or keep it as a quiet way to hear the words you wrote for them.

How to Turn a Poem Into a Song

From a poem on the page to a finished song in four steps.

1

Paste your poem

Open the Own Lyrics tab and paste the poem, up to 3,000 characters. Add [Verse] or [Chorus] tags if you like.

2

Choose a sound

Pick one of the six poem to song presets, or describe the genre, the voice and the mood you hear when you read the poem.

3

Generate two songs

Press Generate. In about a minute poem to song puts two full versions in your library.

4

Listen, refine and share

Keep the take that fits the poem, extend or edit it, and download the MP3 to share.

How to Prepare a Poem for Music

A few small changes help any poem to song come out better. Your words stay your words.

Mark the stanzas
Put [Verse] above each stanza. The singer treats each one as a section and breathes between them.
Find a chorus
If one line or couplet carries the poem, repeat it under a [Chorus] tag. A returning line turns a poem into a song.
Keep lines singable
Very long lines are hard to sing. If a line runs on, split it into two shorter lines at a natural pause.
Match the mood
A gentle poem suits folk or piano; a dramatic one suits rock or orchestral; a playful one suits acoustic pop.
Say the tempo
Poems with a steady beat, like ballads, work well as waltzes or marches. Write the rhythm you hear in the prompt.
Spell names the way they sound
Unusual names or old spellings may be sung oddly. Spell them the way you want them pronounced.
