What counts as perfect pitch?

Naming notes reliably with no reference — nine out of ten across a wide range, not lucky guesses in one octave. Roughly one person in ten thousand has it, and most of them grew up with music early. Relative pitch, hearing intervals, is what most musicians actually use.

Can perfect pitch be learned?

Adults rarely acquire true absolute pitch, but many can learn to anchor one or two notes — often A or C — and work out the rest by interval. That is a useful skill and this page will show it improving. Just do not expect the score to reach one hundred.

Why twelve buttons and not note names with octaves?

Absolute pitch is about the pitch class — a C is a C in any octave. The wide range tests exactly that: the same twelve answers, but the note may come from three different octaves.
