Standard EADGBE — E2, A2, D3, G3, B3 and E4. The tuner is chromatic underneath, so drop D and capo positions still read correctly as note names.

Why does the needle jump?

A plucked string is loudest and least stable at the attack. Let it ring for a second and read the needle while it settles.

Do I need a cable or a clip-on?

No. The laptop or phone microphone is enough; hold the guitar near it and pluck one string at a time.
