How is a viola tuned differently from a violin?

A viola has the same three lower strings as a violin — G, D and A — plus a C below them instead of the E above. Tune the A to 440 Hz first, then the D, G and C in fifths. The thicker C string speaks more slowly, so give it a long, steady bow.

Within a couple of cents on a clean, ringing note, which is finer than most ears. Let each string ring on its own, mute the others, and tune somewhere quiet — background noise and heavy room reverb are what widen the reading.
