What is the difference between white, pink and brown noise?

White has equal energy at every frequency and sounds like static. Pink rolls off by 3 dB an octave, so it sounds balanced, like steady rain. Brown rolls off twice as fast and sounds deep, like a waterfall or wind. Most people sleep to brown and work to pink.

At a moderate volume, yes — that is what the sleep timer is for. Keep it below the level of normal speech; noise you have to talk over is too loud for hours of listening.
