What GarageBand can and cannot do

  1. Is the voice gone, or just quieter? EQ makes it quieter; phase inversion can remove it — but only the dry, centred part.
  2. Is there a ghost? Reverb tails, doublers and delays on the vocal are not identical in both channels, so they survive inversion as a hollow echo of the singer. There is no GarageBand fix for this.
  3. Did the instrumental survive? Missing bass and kick, a phasey thin sound, or a melody line that vanished with the voice all mean the method removed more than the vocal.
