TL;DR
Funk is less about melody than about the pocket: a bass line and a drummer locked together, a scratchy guitar, horn stabs and a singer who gets the room to shout back. If you want to know how to make funk music without assembling a nine-piece band, open the AI funk generator. Its Prompt box already holds a 70s party song about getting down on a Friday night, with a gritty soulful lead, horn stabs, slap bass, wah guitar and crowd call-and-response. Tap one of the six "Start from a vibe" tiles to hear a finished example and load its prompt, then press Generate Music for Free. One run costs 10 credits, takes about a minute and returns two songs.

What makes funk music groove
Funk music grew out of soul and R&B in the late 1960s and peaked on 70s dance floors. Its parts are well known, and every one of them is a word you can put in a prompt.
- Tempo. Most funk sits in a medium, danceable range, roughly 95 to 115 BPM. The page's presets use 96, 104 and 110. Write the number; the model follows it roughly.
- The one. Funk puts the weight on the first beat of the bar, and everything else is syncopated around it. deep pocket drum groove, tight syncopated drums and groovy push the model there.
- Bass. The bass is a lead instrument in funk. slap bass, heavy slap bass groove, hot bass line, or for P-funk a squelchy synth bass. For a brass band, the bass is a sousaphone bass line.
- Guitar. Short, choppy, muted strums and single-note riffs, often through a wah pedal. choppy wah guitar, choppy clean guitar, single-note guitar riff.
- Keys. Clavinet and Rhodes are the classic funk keyboards. clavinet, rhodes stabs.
- Horns. Tight, punchy stabs rather than long lines. tight horn section stabs, punchy brass section hits, or trumpets and trombones trading riffs.
- Voices. A gritty or soulful lead plus the crowd: call-and-response, big group chorus. Disco-leaning funk often has a powerful female vocal.
- Space. Good funk leaves gaps. lots of space, cool and understated keep the parts from piling up.
Step by step with the AI funk generator
- Open the AI funk generator. It is the same form as the main AI music generator, pre-set for funk. The Prompt tab is selected and the model picker shows v6 Mini, the free tier.
- Read the preset. The Prompt box says: A 70s funk party song about everybody getting down on a Friday night, gritty soulful male lead, tight horn section stabs, slap bass, choppy wah guitar and a crowd call-and-response. Instrumental Only is off. Below are the chips (library, + Lyrics, Image, Video, Audio, Instrumental Only), the Inspiration genre row, Number of Songs to Generate set to 2, and the Public switch.

- Tap a vibe. One tap plays that vibe's example and copies its prompt into the box, setting Instrumental Only to match. Tap 70s party funk and the tile shows a pause icon while the player bar plays Get Down Tonight: 70s Funk.

- Browse the six examples. Lower on the page, each example is listed with its duration and tags. All were made on v6 from exactly the prompt on their tile.

- Open a song page. Get Down Tonight shows the cover, a play button, Share, the tags and the lyrics. The intro is pure funk bandleading: "Friday! You ready? / Whole room! Get ready!"

- Press Generate Music for Free. The note under the button says Sign up free and get 16 credits — no credit card required. One run is 10 credits for two songs. They will be new songs in that style, not the example again.
- Pick the tighter groove. The two takes will differ in bass line, horns and melody. Keep one or both.
Writing a funk prompt that works
The presets follow a clear pattern: era or subgenre + subject + voice + rhythm section + one colour. With funk, the rhythm section matters most, so spend your words there.
- Start with the flavour. 70s funk party song, spaced-out psychedelic funk, funky disco, minimal funk instrumental, new orleans funk brass band instrumental.
- Name a party or a scene. Funk lyrics are about the floor, the night and the crowd. about everybody getting down on a Friday night gives the model a room to fill. For your own words, use the Own Lyrics tab (lyrics up to 5,000 characters, style up to 1,000, title up to 80), or start in the AI lyrics generator.
- Describe bass and drums first. slap bass and tight syncopated drums carry more weight than any lead instrument.
- Pick one guitar and one keyboard sound. choppy wah guitar plus clavinet is classic.
- Ask for the crowd. call-and-response or big group chorus brings the party vocals.
- For instrumentals, write it and switch it on. Three of the six presets begin with instrumental and their tiles turn on Instrumental Only.
- Watch the length. The Prompt box takes up to 500 characters; the presets use about 150 to 200.
Our Suno prompts guide lists more style words that reliably change the sound.
The six funk vibes on the page
The six tiles on the AI funk generator, with the exact prompt behind each example:
| Vibe | What it is | Prompt (verbatim) |
|---|---|---|
| 70s party funk | Horns, slap bass and a crowd (the page's preset); the example runs 3:25 | A 70s funk party song about everybody getting down on a Friday night, gritty soulful male lead, tight horn section stabs, slap bass, choppy wah guitar and a crowd call-and-response |
| Slap bass groove | Instrumental built around the bass; 2:46 | funk instrumental, 104 BPM, heavy slap bass groove, tight syncopated drums, choppy clean guitar, clavinet, punchy brass section hits, feel-good and groovy |
| P-funk | Psychedelic, synth bass, group chorus; 4:04 | A spaced-out psychedelic funk song about a party on a spaceship, deep male vocal and a big group chorus, squelchy synth bass, wah guitar and horns |
| Funky disco | Four on the floor with strings; 3:54 | A funky disco song about the dance floor lighting up at midnight, powerful female vocal, four on the floor beat, strings, funky guitar and a hot bass line |
| Minimal funk | Instrumental, sparse and cool; 3:05 | minimal funk instrumental, 96 BPM, deep pocket drum groove, tight bass, single-note guitar riff, rhodes stabs, lots of space, cool and understated |
| Brass band | Instrumental New Orleans street parade; 2:03 | new orleans funk brass band instrumental, 110 BPM, sousaphone bass line, snare and bass drum second line groove, trumpets and trombones trading riffs, street parade energy |
The P-funk example shows what big group chorus does: the chorus shouts "Hey, starship! Make some room!" with a (Whole crew! Whole crew!) answer.
Two more of our own, untested:
- funk rock song about a heatwave in the city, raspy male vocal, distorted wah guitar riff, slap bass, hard-hitting drums, 108 BPM
- smooth instrumental jazz funk, 100 BPM, electric piano solo, fretless bass, light syncopated drums, warm horn pads, relaxed and sunny
Common funk mistakes
- Too fast. Push funk past about 120 BPM and it starts turning into disco or dance pop. Write a number in the 95 to 115 range.
- Everything playing at once. Horns, strings, synths, two guitars and a choir leave no room for the groove. Funk needs gaps; lots of space helps.
- No bass instruction. If you only describe the singer and the horns, the bass may be polite. Name it: slap bass, hot bass line.
- Long melodic guitar solos. Funk guitar is rhythmic. Ask for choppy or single-note riff rather than a soaring solo.
- Naming an artist. Describe the era, groove and sounds instead. You get an original song in that spirit.
- Judging from one take. Two arrive per run. If both miss the same way, change the prompt.
Choosing a model
The model picker at the top right has three choices. v6 Mini is the free tier, "Fast drafts, high volume", and new accounts start there. v6 ("Most powerful, for any song") and v6 Wild ("Best for experimental ideas") need a paid plan. The six examples were made on v6. Funk has many interlocking parts, so drafting on v6 Mini and then running your best prompt on v6 is a sensible routine; v6 Wild is there if you want to push P-funk further out. Every run costs 10 credits on any model; plans are on the pricing page.
After the song is made
- Stretch the jam. Funk loves a long groove. Extend Song continues from any point; see our guide to extending a song for where to cut.
- Swap a section. Replace Section regenerates just the part that did not work, such as a breakdown.
- Restyle it. Cover Song re-performs a song in a new style.
- Play along. The vocal remover splits a song into two stems, vocals and instrumental, so bass players and singers can practise over it.
- Put it on video. The AI music video tool builds a video from the song.
- Download. Downloads come with a plan; see pricing.

FAQ
What tempo is funk music?
Usually around 95 to 115 BPM. The instrumental presets on the page use 96, 104 and 110 BPM. Write the number into the prompt; there is no separate tempo field, and the model follows it roughly.
Can I get slap bass and horns?
Yes. Write slap bass and horn section stabs or brass section hits in the prompt, as the 70s party funk and Slap bass groove tiles do.
Can I make instrumental funk?
Yes. Turn on Instrumental Only and start the prompt with "funk instrumental". Three of the six tiles on the AI funk generator are instrumental.
How long are the songs?
The six examples run from 2:03 to 4:04. Extend a track if you want a longer jam.
Is it free?
New accounts get 16 free credits with no card, enough for one 10-credit run that returns two songs on v6 Mini. After that, credits come from a plan or a credit pack.
Can I use AI funk commercially, on YouTube, at events or on Spotify?
Commercial use is included only on the Standard plan and above, the 2,500+ credit packs, and Team plans. Songs made with free credits, the Starter plan or the Mini credit pack are for personal use only. See pricing before you use a track in paid work.
Can I keep a song private?
Yes, on a paid plan: switch Public off before generating.
