TL;DR

Techno is built from very few parts: a steady four-on-the-floor kick, a rumbling bass, percussion loops that shift slowly, and a synth sound that repeats until it gets under your skin. If you want to know how to make techno without a rack of drum machines, open the AI techno generator. It opens with Instrumental Only switched on and a complete prompt already in the box: dark berlin warehouse techno, 132 BPM, pounding kick, sub bass, metallic percussion loops, eerie synth stabs. Tap one of the six "Start from a vibe" tiles to hear a finished example and load its prompt, then press Generate Music for Free. One run costs 10 credits, takes about a minute and returns two tracks.

What makes techno music sound like techno

Techno music started in Detroit in the mid-1980s and found its second home in Berlin after 1989, in warehouses and empty buildings. Both cities left words you can put straight into a prompt.

  • Tempo. Most techno sits between about 120 and 140 BPM. Dub techno and minimal lean toward the lower end, peak time and acid toward the top. The six presets use 122 to 135. Write the number; the model follows it roughly, not to the exact beat.
  • The kick. A kick drum on every beat, heavy and constant. pounding kick drum, huge driving kick, soft steady kick each give a different weight.
  • Drum machines. The Roland TR-909 is the classic techno drum sound. Writing 909 drums is understood.
  • Bass. Either a deep sub that you feel more than hear (rumbling sub bass, deep rolling bass) or the squelchy Roland TB-303 line that defines acid (squelching 303 acid bass line).
  • Loops and texture. Techno moves by small changes over long stretches. hypnotic, metallic percussion loops, subtle evolving synth textures, clicky percussion.
  • Chords and pads. Detroit techno is warmer and more melodic: soulful string pads, melodic synth arpeggio. Dub techno uses chord stabs drenched in echo and reverb.
  • The room. Techno is music for a place. berlin warehouse, main room energy, raw rave energy, early morning city sunrise. These room words steer the mood more than you might expect.
  • No vocals. Techno is instrumental by default, which is why the page opens with Instrumental Only on.

Step by step with the AI techno generator

  1. Open the AI techno generator. It is the same form as the main AI music generator, pre-set for techno. The Prompt tab is selected, and the model picker in the top right shows v6 Mini, the free tier.
  2. Read the preset. The Prompt box says: dark berlin warehouse techno, 132 BPM, pounding kick drum, rumbling sub bass, hypnotic metallic percussion loops, eerie synth stabs, relentless and industrial. The Instrumental Only chip is lit, so nothing will be sung. You also see the other chips (library, + Lyrics, Image, Video, Audio), the Inspiration genre row, Number of Songs to Generate at 2 and the Public switch.

The AI techno generator as it opens: the Prompt tab with the dark Berlin warehouse techno preset at 132 BPM, Instrumental Only switched on, v6 Mini in the model picker, Number of Songs to Generate at 2, the Public switch on, vibe tiles for Berlin warehouse, Detroit techno and Minimal techno, and the Generate Music for Free button

  1. Tap a vibe. One tap plays that vibe's example track and copies its prompt into the box, and sets Instrumental Only to match. Tap Detroit techno and the prompt changes to detroit techno, 128 BPM, driving 909 drums…, the tile shows a pause icon and the player bar plays Detroit Sunrise: Detroit Techno.

After tapping the Detroit techno tile: the Prompt box holds the Detroit techno prompt at 128 BPM, Instrumental Only is on, the tile shows a pause icon, the example list on the right shows Concrete Pulse (3:37), Detroit Sunrise (3:35) and Minimal Motion (3:52), and the player bar plays Detroit Sunrise tagged Detroit Techno, Melodic, 909

  1. Browse all six examples. Lower on the page each example is listed with its length and tags. Each was made on v6 from exactly the prompt on its tile.

The AI Techno Generator Examples list: Concrete Pulse: Berlin Techno (3:37), Detroit Sunrise: Detroit Techno (3:35), Minimal Motion: Minimal Techno (3:52), Acid Rain: Acid Techno (3:55), Peak Hour: Peak Time Techno (3:56) and Dub Chamber: Dub Techno (4:30), each with a turntable disc and tags

  1. Open a track page. Detroit Sunrise has its cover, a play button, Share and its tags. Where a sung song would show lyrics, it says Instrumental track — no lyrics.

The song page for Detroit Sunrise: Detroit Techno: a cover photo of a city street with brick buildings and skyscrapers at sunrise, duration 3:35, a green play button, Share, the tags Detroit Techno, Melodic and 909, and a lyrics panel reading Instrumental track — no lyrics

  1. Press Generate Music for Free. The note underneath reads Sign up free and get 16 credits — no credit card required. A run costs 10 credits and returns two tracks. They are new tracks in that style, not the example again.
  2. Compare the two. They will differ in the synth hook, percussion and structure. Keep the more hypnotic one, or both.

Writing a techno prompt that works

All six presets use the same order: subgenre + BPM + kick + bass + one or two textures + mood or room. Techno prompts read more like a list of machines than a description, and that is fine.

  • Lead with the subgenre. dark berlin warehouse techno, detroit techno, minimal techno, acid techno, peak time techno, dub techno.
  • Put the BPM second. 132 BPM. It sets the energy more than any adjective.
  • Describe the kick and the bass separately. pounding kick drum, rumbling sub bass. Techno lives in the low end, so be specific there.
  • Add one or two textures. hypnotic metallic percussion loops, eerie synth stabs. More than that and the loops start fighting.
  • End with the room. relentless and industrial, main room energy, hazy and meditative.
  • Keep Instrumental Only on unless you want a voice. To add one, switch it off and ask for a spoken phrase, a chant or chopped vocal samples.
  • Mind the limit. The Prompt box holds up to 500 characters; the presets use about 130 to 170.

The six techno vibes on the page

These are the six tiles on the AI techno generator, all instrumental, each with the exact prompt behind its example.

VibeWhat it isPrompt (verbatim)
Berlin warehouseDark, industrial, relentless (the page's preset); the example runs 3:37dark berlin warehouse techno, 132 BPM, pounding kick drum, rumbling sub bass, hypnotic metallic percussion loops, eerie synth stabs, relentless and industrial
Detroit technoMelodic and hopeful, with 909 drums and strings; 3:35detroit techno, 128 BPM, driving 909 drums, soulful string pads, melodic synth arpeggio, futuristic and hopeful, early morning city sunrise
Minimal technoSparse, clicky and deep; 3:52minimal techno, 126 BPM, clicky percussion, deep rolling bass, subtle evolving synth textures, lots of space, hypnotic groove
Acid technoA 303 line leads; 3:55acid techno, 135 BPM, squelching 303 acid bass line with rising resonance, hard kicks, clattering hats, raw rave energy
Peak timeBig-room builds and a climax; 3:56peak time techno, 134 BPM, huge driving kick, big rave stab riff, long tension build, hands-in-the-air climax, main room energy
Dub technoEchoing chords, soft kick, meditative; 4:30dub techno, 122 BPM, deep chord stabs drenched in echo and reverb, warm sub bass, soft steady kick, hazy and meditative

Two more of our own, untested, in the same shape:

  • hard techno, 145 BPM, distorted pounding kick, rolling rumble bass, fast industrial percussion, short screeching synth stabs, dark and aggressive
  • melodic techno, 124 BPM, deep steady kick, pulsing bass, emotional synth arpeggios, slow evolving pads, long breakdown, cinematic

Common techno mistakes

  • No BPM. Without a number, "techno" can drift toward house or EDM tempos. Write 128 BPM or wherever you want it.
  • Too many elements. Techno is about a few sounds repeating. Five synths, a piano and a choir turn it into trance or cinematic music.
  • Leaving Instrumental Only off by accident. If a voice appears where you did not want one, check the chip. The techno page opens with it on and every techno tile keeps it on, but if you switch it off to try a vocal, remember to turn it back on.
  • Pop song words. catchy chorus, verse and hook push toward pop structure. Techno words are build, breakdown, loop, tension.
  • Mixing moods. dark and industrial with uplifting and euphoric makes a confused track. Pick one room.
  • Judging from one take. Two tracks come back each run. If both miss the same way, change the prompt.

Choosing a model

The picker at the top right has three models. v6 Mini is the free tier, "Fast drafts, high volume", and new accounts start on it. v6 ("Most powerful, for any song") and v6 Wild ("Best for experimental ideas") need a paid plan. The six examples were made on v6. Techno depends on the sound of the kick and the bass, so a good routine is to find your prompt on v6 Mini and then run it on v6. v6 Wild suits stranger ideas, such as techno built from found sounds. Every run costs 10 credits on any model; plans are on the pricing page.

After the track is made

  • Make it DJ length. Club tracks run long. Extend Song continues a track from any point; our guide to extending a song covers where to cut so the join stays on the beat.
  • Check the tempo before you mix two tracks: our BPM guide explains how to read it.
  • Redo one part. Replace Section regenerates a stretch you do not like, such as a breakdown.
  • Restyle it. Cover Song re-performs a track in a different style.
  • Separate a voice. If you added vocals, the vocal remover splits the track into two stems, vocals and instrumental.
  • Add visuals. The AI music video tool turns a track into a video.
  • Download. Downloads come with a plan; see pricing.

FAQ

What BPM is techno?

Usually 120 to 140 BPM. The page's presets range from 122 (dub techno) to 135 (acid techno). Type the number into the prompt; there is no separate BPM field, and the model follows it roughly.

Can it make acid techno with a 303 line?

Yes. Ask for a squelching 303 acid bass line with rising resonance, as the Acid techno tile on the AI techno generator does.

Can I add vocals to techno?

Yes. Switch off Instrumental Only and ask for a spoken phrase, a chant or chopped vocal samples. Keep the vocal short so it stays techno.

How long are the tracks?

The six examples run from 3:35 to 4:30. Extend a track several times for a longer, mix-friendly version.

What is the difference between techno and house?

Both run on a four-on-the-floor kick. House is warmer, with chords, swing and often vocals; techno is darker, more repetitive and more about texture. For the other side, try the AI house generator.

Is it free?

New accounts get 16 free credits with no card, enough for one 10-credit run that returns two tracks on v6 Mini. After that, credits come from a plan or a credit pack.

Can I use AI techno commercially, in a DJ set, on YouTube or on Spotify?

Commercial use is included only on the Standard plan and above, the 2,500+ credit packs, and Team plans. Tracks made with free credits, the Starter plan or the Mini credit pack are for personal use only. Check pricing before playing a paid gig, streaming with ads or releasing a track.

Final take

How to make techno with AI is mostly a matter of naming machines and a room: the subgenre, a BPM, the kick, the bass, one or two textures and the mood. The six vibes on the AI techno generator are proven prompts from a Berlin warehouse to a dub-soaked basement. Tap one, change one ingredient at a time, and build your own set.
